a little story about me (part 2)
After I graduated from art school, I really didnt know what I wanted to do…well, except that I didn’t want to be a fashion designer. To be honest, I really wanted to be a painting major but when I applied to Mass Art, I knew that I would never be seen as a “serious painter”. My art style was filled with bright, bold color and I didn’t think I would be accepted. (Being in art school was difficult enough to be honest. I will never forget the day as a freshman I received in my blind review “this student does not belong here” in bold letters as my semester artwork hung on the wall.) So I had a feeling I was right not applying to the painting program.
But there I was months later settled into a corporate job, making money and every day being asked “why are you here?” I had no idea! So I did what every girl does and I applied to pastry school!
Somehow Johnson and Wales University accepted me to their Baking and Pastry Program and every weekend I would leave at 3:30am to drive down to Rhode Island. This was after working a full time job all week. (But boy did I smell good when I got home!) We would bake all day and then all the students would contribute for our meals throughout the weekend. The culinary students would be cooking. We would be baking. It was a blur of activity! But something was off.
I remember getting into a slight argument with one of my professors about gluten and box cake mixes. (Funny thing is later on in life I would be diagnosed with Celiac Disease, so those two things would become a solid no for me!) I remember feeling as though he had favorites in the class and I was definitely NOT one of them.
He was also very busy with those favorites, so I found myself helping the other students in the class. One day a huge lightbulb went off.
I was absolutely the happiest when I was helping my fellow students. Helping them understand. Teaching them in a way…..
BINGO! I really truly was a TEACHER. Time to make a decision.
Part 3 coming soon!
